Institutional artwork, titled, “Happy Easter!?” by anonymous artist depicting apples that look like tomatoes and apple blossoms on the branch. Nicely stylized approach with color pencil filling in areas carefully outlined in color pencil. Reminiscent of the type of blocked out areas typical of coloring books from the era. And then there is the Happy Easter greeting with both an exclamation point and a question mark. Paper measures 12 inches high by 9 inches wide it is noted in pencil on the back as No. 9 (possibly referring to the case number). Paper has a large chip at the top with some old clear tape which is matted out. Circa 1950. This painting is from a large group of institutional artworks purchased in the 1980s. The works in this collection were produced in the 1940s and 1950s at an undesignated institution, most likely from the Midwest. Some of the works on paper were organized in presentation portfolios in what appeared to be teaching aids, sometimes organized by individual artist/creator or grouped in themes with occasional notations regarding the artists/creators intentions or in some cases diagnosis. Most are anonymous or have the signatures obscured or taped over. Many have been exhibited and I have shared many with various individuals who have had an interest in this type of artwork. One noted observer felt that these were produced during the early years of clinical interest in serious art therapy as revealed and treated through the arts. Send questions.
