Boston struggling to combat white supremacy and extremist groups

The Massachusetts-based founder of the neo-Nazi group NSC-131 appeared in court today, following his arrest at a demonstration he organized Saturday outside a drag queen story hour in Jamaica Plain. The rally was the fourth incident of white supremacists demonstrating in Massachusetts this year, following Patriot Front’s march through downtown Boston earlier this month, an NSC-131 demonstration during South Boston’s Saint Patrick’s Day parade in March and a neo-Nazi protest outside Brigham and Women’s Hospital in February.

Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden and United States Attorney for Massachusetts Rachael Rollins both released statements condemning the groups and vowing to crack down on white supremacist activity in the state. But many are wondering whether officials are doing enough to combat hate. GBH news investigative reporter Phillip Martin and Robert Trestan, executive director of the Anti-Defamation League’s Boston office, joined Adam Reilly to discuss.
