Responses to Anti-Asian Hate Crimes



While hate crimes in general have increased during the pandemic and socio-political unrest of the past year, the crimes targeting Asians have seen an explosive increase, and a timely discussion was organized to discuss responses to this problem from all levels of government and civil society. Audrey E. Kitagawa, Chair of the G20 Interfaith Forum Anti-Racism Initiative moderated a panel discussion which included Erika Moritsugu, Deputy Assistant to U.S. President Joseph Biden and AA and NHPI (Asian American and Native Hawaiian-Pacific Islander) Senior Liaison; Jacinta Ma, Director of the Office of Communications and Legislative Affairs at the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission; U.S. Congresswoman Grace Meng, Co-Sponsor of the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act, Assemblymember David Chiu, representing the 17th Assembly District (San Francisco); and Carl Chan, President of the Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, Community Activist, and a victim of a racially-motivated assault.
