President Joe Biden popped into Reno for about an hour to talk with campaign volunteers and supporters in anticipation of a bruising fight for Nevada’s six electoral votes. It was part of a three-day trip with additional stops in Las Vegas, Phoenix and Dallas. After greeting Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve and Washoe County Commissioner Alexis Hill on the airport tarmac, Biden was driven nearby to a packed room at the Washoe County Democratic Party headquarters. He joked and gave high-fives to two small children near his podium before launching into an attack on his Republican rival and predecessor, Donald Trump. Biden highlights contrast with Trump during Reno visit “All of us in this room have one fundamental difference between us and Trump — I mean this sincerely — we have a different value set,” he said. He claimed Trump disrespects America’s war dead, wants more tax cuts for the rich and seeks to strip Medicare of the ability to negotiate drug prices. “When he passed his last tax cut, which exploded the deficit larger than any government ever has, he said at Mar-a-Lago, ‘I made a lot of you richer,’” Biden said of Trump speaking to wealthy donors. It’s about values, Biden said. The president championed a cap on insulin costs and bonds for an electric high-speed rail project connecting Las Vegas with Los Angeles — “taking tens of thousands of vehicles off the road and helping the environment.” A woman in the audience asked Biden about bringing back the child tax credit of $3,600 per child. The president said it would be a priority in his second term — and then gave a long answer about how preschool programs increase a child’s chance of completing college by 50%. Also in a next term, Biden said he would raise the tax rate on billionaires from an average now of 8.3% to 25%. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as the 47th vice president from 2009 to 2017 under Barack Obama and represented Delaware in the United States Senate from 1973 to 2009. Biden was reelected to the Senate six times and was the fourth-most senior sitting senator at the time when he became Obama’s vice president after they won the 2008 presidential election, defeating John McCain and his running mate Sarah Palin. Obama and Biden were reelected in 2012, defeating the Republican ticket of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan. During eight years as vice president, Biden leaned on his Senate experience and frequently represented the administration in negotiations with congressional Republicans, including on the Budget Control Act of 2011, which resolved a debt ceiling crisis, and the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012, which addressed the impending “fiscal cliff”. On foreign policy, Biden was a close counselor to the president and took a leading role in designing the withdrawal of U.S. troops.
